As a church, we are about to embark on a five-week Life Group initiative. We are asking everyone to commit to being a part of a Life Group for just five weeks. There are so many wonderful reasons to be a part of a Life Group all the time, but we chose five to share with you. Hopefully you’ll agree that the benefits of being a part of a Life Group are totally worth the effort.

1. Discover and exercise your spiritual gifts

Every believer has been given Spiritual Gifts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:8-10, 28-30; Ephesians 4:11). These gifts are to be exercised in community with other believers, because they are meant for the “common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7). But when we gather with a couple hundred others, it is impossible for everyone to exercise their gifts at once. When we gather in groups of 8-12 people, there is more opportunity for people to learn about their gifts, practice them and receive feedback and encouragement from others.

2. Build authentic relationships

We were never meant to live the Christian life as individuals. We have been called to love one another in real community, and that means more than just showing up to church on Sundays. If we want to truly live out all the “one another’s” of scripture, we need to be purposeful about gathering in settings that deepen authentic community. A Life Group provides the context for getting below the surface, and walking through life with other believers.

3. Discuss and apply what you’ve been learning

We have all had the experience where we bump into someone who missed church on Sunday, and they ask, “what was the sermon about?” “ummm, ahhhh…well…” is the common response. It is great to have a preacher expound on the scriptures for us, but it’s even better to have an opportunity to discuss that message with others. Taking notes, and discussing our thoughts with others is the best way to retain the lessons we’ve learned. Additionally, when we gather with a small group of believers we have the opportunity to begin applying everything we learned on Sunday.

4. Receive care and prayer

Your pastor loves you and cares about all your needs, but unfortunately he doesn’t have time to personally support and disciple every person in the church. Life Groups are the first line of care and support for those who need it. Your Life Group leader, and fellow group members, are there to walk you through challenges, pray for you regularly, and help you get the care you need.

5. Context to serve and reach out to your neighbour

Gathering in smaller communities mobilizes the church in ways that aren’t possible with a large group of people. Life Groups are strategically scattered throughout the city, giving them a unique perspective and an opportunity to meet local needs, which may not be apparent from a look out of the window from a stationary church building. Some people, who would never darken the door of a church, would gladly accept an invitation to a home for a potluck, or a games night. Think about the opportunities your Life Group has reach your neighbours.

Remember, sign up for our Life Group initiative begins Sunday, September 27th!
